Bricks and Bing cherries and an almost ethereal aroma of orange blossom on top of crushed rock and graphite are on the nose, with more savory notes of leather and spice developing on the palate, emphasized by the austerity of chalky tannins.
This red offers an inviting expression of cherry, raspberry, floral, mineral and spice flavors. Pure, with a firm backbone of tannins, vibrant acidity and a lingering, fruity aftertaste. Sangiovese, Colorino, Canaiolo and Merlot. Best from 2025 through 2040.
The 2019 Barolo Lazzarito continues a trend seen in recent years in which the focus has been more about finesse than raw power. Intense red fruit, iron, dried herbs, chalk, dried rose petal and white pepper all run through this deep, virile Barolo. The power and intensity of Serralunga really come alive on the heady, explosive finish. Bright saline notes linger on the deep, resonant finish. A Barolo of raw, unbridled power, the Lazzarito demands patience.
Deep crimson. A complex yet not overtly exuberant nose of blackberry, blueberry and with hints of iron, damson and liquorice powder; sweet oak hints and a suggestion of coffee bean and bell pepper. Elegant, fluid palate of blackberry and raspberry fruit – more savoury than sweet. Velvety tannins and supple acidity create the perfect balance. Silky smoothness, yet fresh. Not a brawny wine and now at its peak, even if it hardly shows any signs of development. Certified organic by ICEA. 100% Montepulciano d’Abruzzo from the Bellovedere vineyard trained on pergola at 200 m elevation with south-south-east exposure in Spoltore. The vines are on average 46 years old. Fermented in tronconic Slavonian oak casks. Malolactic conversion and aged for 18 months in barriques, tonneaux and concrete. Unfiltered and unfined.
The 2019 Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Asinone is intense with a bouquet of stone dust, dried violets, black currants and cocoa powder. This is elegance exemplified, velvety and soothing, yet energetic, with a dense wave of polished red and black fruits that wash across the palate, leaving minerals and sweet tannins to mingle toward the close. A subtle layer of sour citrus helps enliven the otherwise-structured finale as minty herbal tones slowly fade. The 2019 is a total darling and has the balance to mature beautifully in collectors’ cellars.
Moving into more classically styled Barolo, the 2019 Barolo Castiglione has benchmark pure aromas and character of blood orange, raspberry licorice, fresh herbs, and fresh red flowers. It is taut with good intensity and is gripping with ripe tannins, driving but not harsh acidity, and a rocky mineral texture. Pure and clean, with red berries, turned earth, and bergamot, this is another outstanding entry to the range of Barolo from Vietti that will be deserving of time in cellar and drink well 2025-2040.
A complex, outstanding Chianti Rufina with savory grapefruit peel, tar, white pepper, dry earth, new leather and hints of mineral and fine musk. Pretty full-bodied and minerally on the palate with vertical, close-knit tannins extending to a long, savory finish. Drink or hold.
