The 2009 Alta Langa Metodo Classico Pas Dosé Riserva Zero 140 (a blend of 85% Pinot Nero and 15% Chardonnay) is not quite full-bodied but almost, showing plenty of rich layering and texture. The number 140 in the sparkler's name refers to the number of months this special bottle ages on the lees. This is a real beauty with peach, orchard fruit, baked bread, toasted pine nut and hints of dusty mine
The 2021 Inzolia is sweetly scented but also finessed and floral, with a dusting of confectioners’ sugar and spice that gives way to ripe pear and hints of cardamom. This rushes the palate with soft textures, yet quickly takes on a reverberation of spicy green citrus, as nuances of tropical melon form toward the close. A salty flourish defines the finale, as the 2021 tapers off wickedly fresh and squeaky-clean, while leaving the mouth watering for more.
Vietti has the enormous advantage of 10 MGA sites at its disposition for blending purposes (and for making single-vineyard wines). This allows them to select the fruit they want to best express any one vintage. The 2018 Barolo Castiglione draws upon those 10 sites (including the recent additions of Mosconi, Ginestra, Bricco Ravera and Briccolina) to make what is ultimately its best-selling wine (with 35,000 bottles released). This classic rendition is tonic and clean with varietal tones of wild berry, rose and rusty nail.
Macerated cherry, plum, licorice, iron and eucalyptus flavors permeate this concentrated yet supple red, which is rich but never heavy, with ample acidity and dense, refined tannins lending support. Trades a little freshness for ripeness and depth. Best from 2026 through 2043.
This is one of the most structured Barbarescos from here, showing lots of dark fruit and black olives, together with bark and black truffles. Full-bodied and layered with fantastic structure and a long finish. Needs four or five years to come around.
Gorgeous scents of cherry, raspberry, rose hip and white pepper are augmented by leather, tobacco and chalky, mineral flavors in this detailed, complex red, which starts out fresh and inviting, before the dense matrix of tannins puts a lock on the finish. Nonetheless, this has length, harmony and stellar potential.
This red combines a vibrant structure with pure fruit, elegance and intensity. Cherry, strawberry, licorice, wild herb, mineral and tobacco flavors align with the supple texture, while fine-grained tannins emerge midpalate and build to the long, spirited finish. Best from 2026 through 2046.
