WINE SPECTATOR TOP 100 #63
A lively, medium- to full-bodied red, with rich hints of melted licorice and espresso layered with aromas and flavors of blackberry tart, dried mint and olive tapenade. Well-knit, with a fine frame of chalky tannins. Drink now through 2025. 7,500 cases made, 2,500 cases imported.
The 2018 Barolos are absolutely beautiful. There is not much more to say than that. Over the years, Luca Currado and Elena Penna have dialed in a style that works well for these vineyards.
The 2018 Barolo Lazzarito is tense, vibrant and very much closed in on itself. Searing tannins and Serralunga structure dominate today. Crushed rocks, gravel, red fruit, rose petal, lavender and sage all run though this sculpted, vibrant Serralunga Barolo. What stands out most about the Lazzarito today is that is stylistically more similar to the other Barolos than it was a few years ago. I expect great things in time here.
Dried cherry, dried cranberry, star anise, clove and a hint of pepper open the nose of this well-crafted Amarone. Soft and plush on the palate, highlighting dried cherry and loads of baking spices, the wine begins to reveal turned earth, bitter chocolate and floral notes as it opens. It’s really well-structured, with elegant tannins and the needed acidity to keep the wine in balance.
This is one of my sweetheart wines from Castiglione Falletto. The Vietti 2018 Barolo Rocche di Castiglione is beautifully etched and sharp with an especially delineated quality that is uncommon in this vintage. Fruit comes from a small 8,000-square-meter parcel, and like the other wines in this cru series from Vietti, it ages in oak casks for two years. The wine's texture is beautifully smooth and polished thanks to the carefully integrated tannins. Only 3,693 bottles were made.
The 2020 Barolo Brunate is a dark, beguiling wine. Black cherry, dried herbs, leather, game, licorice and incense lend gorgeous sepia-toned nuance. Brooding and inward, the 2020 clearly needs time. It is a super-classic Brunate that is hard to read in the early going, but the weight, substance and power are clearly there. Dense, meaty and dark, the 2020 shows Serralunga-like intensity.
Deep crimson. A complex yet not overtly exuberant nose of blackberry, blueberry and with hints of iron, damson and liquorice powder; sweet oak hints and a suggestion of coffee bean and bell pepper. Elegant, fluid palate of blackberry and raspberry fruit – more savoury than sweet. Velvety tannins and supple acidity create the perfect balance. Silky smoothness, yet fresh. Not a brawny wine and now at its peak, even if it hardly shows any signs of development. Certified organic by ICEA. 100% Montepulciano d’Abruzzo from the Bellovedere vineyard trained on pergola at 200 m elevation with south-south-east exposure in Spoltore. The vines are on average 46 years old. Fermented in tronconic Slavonian oak casks. Malolactic conversion and aged for 18 months in barriques, tonneaux and concrete. Unfiltered and unfined.
