Savory and complex nose with a meaty, earthy undertone to the orange rind, iron, baking spices, leather and ripe plums. Juicy and firm on the palate with a medium to full body and abundant, mealy tannins. Long and caressing finish. Drink or hold.
The 2020 Barbera D'Alba Vigna Scarrone takes on a deeper, more layered character, with floral boysenberry, violet, and cedar. It has medium to full body, with a stony mouthfeel and notes of mocha, turned earth, and fresh black plum. A bit of delicate smokiness works nicely into its framework, and it has a long finish. Drink 2024-2034.
Beautiful nose of white peaches, mangoes, jasmine, waxed grapefruit, thyme and hints of salted sourdough. Distinct salty, ashy minerality. It’s medium-bodied, vibrant and textured. Stony and crisp, yet creamy and flavorful throughout. Serious Soave. The second vintage from an old-vine selection from the historic, volcanic Monte Foscarino vineyards. Drink now or hold.
Pretty violet and lavender tones give way to musky blackberries and hints of cracked chalk as the 2019 Rosso Conero Riserva Agontano opens in the glass. This cool-toned beauty shows its minerality up front, as silky textures gain grip through a mix of tart, wild berry fruits and stimulating acidity. The 2019 tapers off with lip-smacking tension and grippy tannins, yet it’s packed full of zesty energy. The Agontano is a 100% Montepulciano that’s refined in second-pass barriques. This is a really beautiful expression of the variety, one that will need a short stay in the cellar to show its best.
Dark and imposing, the 2016 Carmignano Riserva Trefiano smolders up from the glass, with rich plums giving way to crushed violets, stone dust, hints of tobacco and saddle leather. An opulent wave of velvety textures floods the entire palate with ripe red and black fruits, leaving a saturation of minerals and grippy tannins in its wake. This is potent, long and structured; yet the balance is on point, as notes of hard red candies and hints of licorice fade. The 2016 Trefiano is quite a wine. This is a blend of 80% Sangiovese, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Caniolo that spends eighteen months refining in medium-toast tonneaux, half new and half second pass.
The 2019 Barolo Ravera is the most intensely mineral and saline of the Barolos. Crushed rocks, white pepper, flowers, orange zest, red berry fruit and bright acids all run through this finely sculpted, chiseled Barolo. Readers who enjoy Barolos of energy and tension will adore the Ravera. I have always had a soft spot for this Barolo. The 2019 is another magnificent dimension of Vietti's dark horse, a wine that over the last 10-12 years has routinely challenged for the crown here, and often won!
HISTORICAL RE-RELEASE. Masses of crushed black cherries, plum sauce, grilled herbs and worn leather are offset by a hint of graphite as the 2013 Carmignano Villa di Capezzana Dieci Anni slowly awakens in the glass. Seductively silky and enveloping, it coats the palate with ripe red and blue fruits, excited by a tinge of sour citrus. Rosy inner florals form toward the close. This is sultry and staining through the finish as adolescent tannins grumble, yet the mouth is left watering for more, leaving notes of dark chocolate and espresso bean to slowly fade. The 2013 is steadily moving toward maturity, with many years of positive development ahead.
