ABOUT THE WINERY

The story of the Enrico Serafino winery is the story of Roero, one of Piedmont’s key winegrowing areas. Roero faces the famous Langhe hills across the Tanaro River in the northeast part of Cuneo Province, and together with Monferrato to the east, Roero and Langhe are recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site for their beauty and their winemaking traditions. Enrico Serafino is the oldest winery in the area, having been established by a gentleman of the same name in Canale d’Alba in 1878. The winery has now been in operation continuously in its original location for 140 years.

In typical Piemontese fashion, founder Enrico Serafino made a wide array of different wines, using grapes grown in areas that even then were known for their high quality, such as Barolo and Gavi. Under modern laws, the wines of a denomination must normally be made inside the specified winegrowing boundaries, but this was long before the first DOC laws were passed in Italy, and it was not unusual for wineries to bring in fruit from any number of neighboring communes. Due to its very long history of making Barolo in Canale, the Enrico Serafino winery is grandfathered as an exception to the requirement to vinify Barolo inside the limits of the Barolo DOCG. Today the winery owns 25 acres of Barolo vineyards in the renowned areas of Serralunga, Monforte d'Alba, and Castiglione Falletto and also makes traditional red wines of Barbera d'Alba and Nebbiolo d'Alba.

Less typically, Serafino in 1878 also began making metodo classico sparkling wines. At that time, sparkling wines as we know them today (wines that were clear of yeast sediment and didn't routinely explode) were a relative novelty. The process had really been mastered in Champagne only a couple of decades earlier, and the procedures and technology were just starting to be available outside Champagne. But sparkling Moscato was beginning to be made in Piedmont, and Serafino was a trailblazer for the nascent industry.

WINES

ENRICO SERAFINO "OUDEIS" ALTA LANGA DOCG BRUT

Enrico Serafino is a specialist in classic-method sparkling wine, having produced this style of wine since the foundation of the winery in 1878. The "Oudeis" Alta Langa Brut is the pinnacle of this long experience, made primarily from Pinot Noir for flavor and body, with 15% Chardonnay for elegance and added complexity. This is an exemplary vintage sparkling wine, showing a great depth of flavor and aromas from at least 3 years of bottle aging in contact with yeast cells.  The name Oudeis comes from the Greek "Odysseus" and means no one. By giving the Alta Langa Brut this name, the winery acknowledges that no one is at the origin of the wine complexity; only terroir has this ability.

ENRICO SERAFINO "OUDEIS" ALTA LANGA DOCG BRUT ROSÉ

Enrico Serafino is a specialist in classic-method sparkling wine, having produced this style of wine since the foundation of the winery in 1878. The Alta Langa Brut Rosé is a variant on the standard theme, using 100% Pinot Nero (Pinot Noir) and picking up a pleasing rosé color and some red-fruit aromas from a short maceration on the skins before the initial fermentation. It is then finished with at least 2½ years of bottle aging in contact with yeast cells.

ENRICO SERAFINO “ZERO” ALTA LANGA DOCG BRUT

Enrico Serafino is a specialist in classic-method sparkling wine, having produced this style of wine since the foundation of the winery in 1878. The Alta Langa Brut Zero is a variant on the standard theme, catering to modern tastes for extremely dry sparkling wines. After its second fermentation to produce the bubbles, the Brut Zero ages in contact with yeast cells for over 5 years, and then does not receive the traditional dose of sugar for sweetening. The result is a rich and yet austere wine with no hint of sweetness.

ENRICO SERAFINO ZERO 140 ALTA LANGA BRUT DOCG RISERVA

Hailing from the historical vineyards of Alta Langa, the Zero 140 was created to show the best expression of the longevity and complexity of this appellation.  After spending at least 12 years on the lees in bottle, the Enrico Serafino Zero 140 is the longest aged on lees Italian sparkling wine.  Each vintage is dedicated to a different theme and the bottles are hand painted a different color to differentiate them in the cellar during the hand riddling process.

ENRICO SERAFINO "GRIFO DEL QUARTARO" GAVI DI GAVI DOCG

Enrico Serafino "Grifo del Quartaro" Gavi di Gavi is a classic example of Piedmont’s noble white wine made from the native Cortese grape. Gavi DOCG is the most esteemed source of Cortese wines and the town of Gavi, at its heart, is recognized to produce the finest expressions of the denomination.  Thanks to the sloping hills and exposure, as well as marly, white chalky and clay-rich earth, the area creates wines with clear-cut character, freshness, and minerality, as well as complex structure.  The grapes for this wine are sourced from a six-hectare vineyard in Monterotondo di Gavi. The name Grifo del Quartaro refers to an antique coin used by Genovese Lords (from the city of Genoa that is not far from the village of Gavi), who were the vineyard land-owners of the Gavi area.

ENRICO SERAFINO "POGGIO DELLA RUPE" GAVI DI GAVI MONTEROTONDO DOCG

Monterotondo, from the municipality of Gavi in the Roero region of southeast Piedmont, is one of the most prestigious MGA areas within the area.  The soils here are characterized their chalky-sulphurous composition with white marls. These soils, coupled with an ideal microclimate, allow the Cortese grape to reach unique levels of complexity and elegance. Poggio della Rupe is the name of the estate where the one hectare of vineyards for this singular wine grow.

ENRICO SERAFINO "PAJENA" BARBERA D’ALBA DOC

Enrico Serafino "Pajena" Barbera d’Alba is the winery’s leading red, a very versatile wine that is particularly food-friendly and can be enjoyed on a daily basis. Barbera is Piedmont’s most popular red grape variety, grown in and among other vineyards throughout the region.  Enrico Serafino's vineyards are located inside Roero DOCG, a famous denomination for Nebbiolo (and white Arneis) wines. The name Pajena is a local slang term for the large birds of prey that are found atop the hills throughout the region and is symbolic of the wild nature found therein.

ENRICO SERAFINO "MONCLIVIO" BAROLO DOCG

Enrico Serafino has expertise in producing Barolo spanning 140 years. Over that expanse of time, the winery has come to control more than 30 acres (12 hectares) of Barolo DOCG vineyards in the renowned areas of Serralunga d'Alba, Castiglione Falletto, and Monforte d’Alba. These communes are all in the part of Barolo with Helvetian soil, which gives full-bodied wines with great longevity.  The name Monclivio refers to the hills in the Barolo region which are covered in steep vineyards.

ENRICO SERAFINO BAROLO SERRALUNGA DOCG

Barolo del comune di Serralunga d’Alba is very well known for its long-lasting, austerity and complexity. The winery has 4.9 acres in the Carpena and Meriame cru, both on the western slopes of Serralunga. The wine is aged 28 months in tonneaux and larger oak cask providing a modern representation of the traditional Serralunga Barolo.

ENRICO SERAFINO "PICOTENER" LANGHE DOC

This unique and rare sub-variety of Nebbiolo was largely forgotten across Piedmont over the last decades. When Enrico Serafino was studying the clonal varieties in their historical vineyards in recent years, they discovered Picotener was planted widely across their vineyards. After trial and study, they determined this forgotten biotype of Nebbiolo called Picotener is capable of expressing unique characteristics and a distinct personality worthy of a singular bottling.

Enrico Serafino "Oudeis" Alta Langa DOCG Brut 2018

Distinctly savory and spicy in the glass, the 2018 Brut Oudeis wafts up with notes of crushed stone, dusty sage, ground ginger and citrus zest. It's elegant and round on the palate, with saline minerals and brisk acidity enlivening the tart orchard fruits. This finishes with a balanced inner sweetness, and sour lemon hints add a lovely contrast. The 2018 Oudeis is a big step up from the 2017 tasted last year. It's a blend of 80% Pinot Noir and 20% Chardonnay.

Enrico Serafino "Oudeis" Alta Langa DOCG Brut Rosé 2018

The 2018 Brut Rosé Oudeis is delicate and understated in the glass; rose, chalk dust and wild strawberry nuances form its bouquet. This is round and pliant on the palate with a salty flourish of mineral-tinged bubbles giving way to tart orchard fruits and sour citrus hints. The Oudeis Brut Rosé puckers the cheeks as a pretty inner sweetness lingers and ginger notes slowly fade.

Enrico Serafino "Grifo del Quartaro" Gavi di Gavi DOCG 2020

With 50,000 bottles released, the Enrico Serafino 2020 Gavi del Comune di Gavi Grifo del Quartaro is a bright and luminous wine that shines with glossy intensity. The bouquet is redolent of citrus, blanched almond, peach and summer dried hay. The Cortese grape always shows a tight mineral note that gives focus to these fun and informal results (offered at a steal of a price).

OCTOBER 2023
Enrico Serafino "Monclivio" Barolo DOCG 2018

This Barolo opens with aromas of raspberry liquor, alpine herbs, cedar, leather and dried rose. Subtle at first, the wine then sneaks up on you with dried Amarena cherry, sandalwood, camphor and a chalky minerality finishing with fine-grained tannins.

DECEMBER 2020
Enrico Serafino Barolo Serralunga DOCG 2016

This family produced wine from the commune of Serralunga has a light prune color and aromas of raspberries, cranberries, plums, graphite, black pepper and young—and yet unpicked—strawberries. Tannic in the mouth, but well matched with acidity and tastes that include those of raspberries, prunes and morel mushrooms. This is fresh and approachable and buzzing with ripe young fruit flavors—consider it the Fleurie of Barolo.
